Students or Psychos?

In what was seen as the biggest show of strength by Telangana supporters since the movement gathered steam a month ago, thousands of students from Hyderabad and nine other districts of the region gathered at the sprawling university campus.

Armed with the court permission to hold the meeting after police denied it, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of students mobilised thousands of students from various parts of the region for "vidyarthi garjana" (students' roar).

The meeting began at 4 p.m. under the tight vigil of hundreds of policemen and personnel of paramilitary forces, who allowed students into the university campus only after establishing their identity.

The campus reverberated with the slogans of "Jai Telangana" as the JAC went all out to make the event a grand success.

Before the meeting began, dozens of folk singers performed on the stage set against the backdrop of the majestic Arts College building.

The Telangana Vidyarthi Garjana concluded in the Osmania University amid slogan shouting. The event was a success according to the political analysts. For a couple of hours the speeches were in good taste, but later speeches were in a bad taste.

Consider this. A person who is a balladeer made his speech like this "We will not spare anyone who tries to say Samaikya Andhra. We would not spare his life for the sake of Telangana. We will prevent the Andhra people from coming back to Hyderabad after the Sankranti holidays". All this sounded like some road side psychos speaking instead of some intellectuals felt many people.

The Osmania University JAC also warned of possible attacks on the Andhra people after the Sankranthi festival. They said that they would make sure that they would not let the Andhra and the Rayalaseema people live in peace in Hyderabad and Telangana.

However except for the speeches which espoused violence against the Andhra and the Rayalaseema people, the Garjana was by an large peaceful and JAC also announced that the people who died for Telangana should be given 10 lakhs each. But TDP and the Congress leaders from Telangana wondered why the students do not ask KCR to give the 10 lakhs to the people since he earned a lot of money by selling tickets in the last assembly elections.
